Saturday Catch-Up: Unlocking the Benefits

Personal and organisational change has transformative potential. In today's Saturday Catch-up, we're going to unlock at the benefits of change from five distinct perspectives. From large scale organisational change to the everyday gains achievable through being open to change in ordinary ways. Change management practices can enhance project success rates, and the opposite is also true - there are hidden costs of forgoing dedicated change managers or thorough change management principles.

  1. May 31 2024 we published How to Implement Sustainable Change Initiatives for Maximised Benefits Realisation. For Change Managers and Change Leaders, the ability to sustain change initiatives and realise their benefits is a top priority. However it's probably the least planned-for part of the change. There are strategies you can use to ensure the sustainability of change initiatives and optimise benefits realisation. By starting as you mean to go on, focussing on the adoption of change, you enhance the likelihood of the realisation of tangible and non-tangible benefits laid out in the business case.

  2. What we know about Change Management: A Guide to Everyday Benefits was posted earlier this week. In this guide we see change management as not just an effective business strategy but also a life skill to be applied across our daily routines. By viewing everyday challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, we can approach changes with a positive outlook. Cultivating a growth mindset involves staying open to new experiences, seeking feedback for self-improvement, and embracing challenges as stepping stones towards personal development.

  3. Diving into the project world in Change Management Effectiveness for Project Success we saw that change management and project management are both fields where shifts and adjustments are constant. Published February 25, 2024, we looked at how effective change management can be the differentiator between a project that flounders and one that flourishes. Focusing on key factors such as meeting objectives, staying on schedule, and staying within budget, we examined the correlation between project success and the efficacy of change management.

  4. The Cost of Not Hiring a Change Manager takes the flip side, arguing that when projects, programs or organisations don’t have effective change management, it can lead to significant costs and risks. Change management protects benefits realisation and ensures smoother transitions, engaged people and better outcomes. It's essential for individuals and organisations because it guides how we prepare, equip, and support people to successfully adopt changes. Published 16 June 2024.

  5. One of the significant challenges that can hinder benefits realisation is resistance. Not every project encounters stringent resistance, and sometimes change resistance can be very subtle. But very often, changes create resistance in some form. Understanding and effectively managing the natural human impulse to resist change is a crucial skill for leaders and managers of successful implementations. In A Reflection on Managing Resistance to Change published earlier this week, we looked into what's really involved in managing resistance to change and explore strategies to navigate this challenge.
