Saturday Catch-Up: Tools for Decision-Making

Effective decision-making is crucial for the success of change initiatives. When decision-making is strong, everything else is easier: setting goals, allocating resources, engaging with stakeholders, responding to feedback and developing appropriate change interventions. The ability for teams and leaders to make timely decisions can significantly impact project performance and organisational growth. However, decision-making is often complex, involving cross-functions, diverse perspectives, and a large amount of information, data and input.

In this Saturday Catch-up, we revisit tools for decision-making in change environments, exploring the various types of decisions, the common challenges faced, and the strategies that can enhance decision-making processes.

  1. Published 28 August 2024, How to Make Decisions During Times of Change discussed how change can make decision-making more challenging because uncertainty increases. Change disrupts our familiar routines and introduces unpredictability. However, we offer some effective strategies to help reduce uncertainty to the point where a clear decision is possible.

  2. While it may seem counterintuitive, friction can be a powerful tool for enhancing the quality of decisions and fostering a more thoughtful and inclusive decision-making culture. The integration of two concepts—changing culture (by not changing it) and leveraging friction in decision-making—can create a powerful synergy within organisations. See more in our article Change through Organisational Culture and Harnessing Friction in Decision Making from July 18, 2024.

  3. Inspired by the US Presidential Debate this week, we presented Incorporating Debate in Corporate Problem Solving, examining why formal debate is not used more in corporate environments, and how it can be helpful for structuring inclusive discussion, encouraging clear thinking and driving transparent problem solving.

  4. In Monitoring Change: Effective Strategies for Steering Committees we explored how organisations often rely on steering committees to monitor and guide projects and programs through the process of delivering these transitions. Because steering committees play a key governance role, a well-functioning steering committee can be the linchpin in driving successful initiatives. We put together some effective strategies that steering committees can adopt to monitor change initiatives with finesse and achieve tangible results. Published 9 August 2024.

  5. In our post on May 27, 2024, we argued that inclusivity is a priority for strong decision making in Crafting an Inclusive Change Strategy: 6 Key Steps for Professionals and Leaders. Leaders and professionals can proactively shape change initiatives that prioritise diversity, empathy, and inclusion. Crafting an inclusive change strategy is not only a strategic advantage but also a moral imperative.
