Saturday Catch-up: the practice of change in data and technology

It's the end of the week. Relax as we take you back through some blog posts you may have missed. This week's Saturday Catch-up theme is the practice of change management in data and technology. Please enjoy some reading from the archives as well as more recent articles.

In order of publication

  1. Published 24 June 2023, Marrying the Robot is a tongue in cheek look at how we incorporate AI into change communications. AI interfaces don't actually know anything, and they can't imagine. Language models use mathematics to predict the most likely sequence of words. In other words, they regurgitate content sourced from existing data and apply rules to it. Machine learning is amazing and improving all the time - but communications professionals know we can't rely on generated content carte-blanche. We see this everyday - it's repetitive, can be reductive, too literal, lacking in soul, too blunt and without the nuance we find delicious in really good writing.

  2. Next was Unleashing the Power of Change & Communication Professional Service Startups also in June 2023. Tech professional service startups hold tremendous power to shape industries, drive innovation, and unlock transformative solutions. Their agility, expertise, and innovative approaches enable them to lead digital transformation, provide scalable solutions, foster innovation, and contribute to economic growth. As startups continue to disrupt traditional practices and challenge the status quo, their impact will be felt across sectors, driving businesses towards a more advanced and competitive future.

  3. Big Change and What it Means for all the other changes was published 2 February 2024 and deals with the influence of global change on how we practice change management locally. The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and technology is undeniably reshaping industries and occupations. It has been a seismic shift requiring a proactive approach to change, not just in terms of skill acquisition but also in the very nature of how we perceive work. Adaptability has been high as individuals and organisations navigate each new uncharted technology trend. AI and technology is shaping the next generation, being in widespread use in households and schools but policy response has been lagging.

  4. Published 4 February 2024 was Technology change: connecting people. Leaders of technology change need to encourage the emotional intelligence that recognises and celebrates differences, connects people and allows the team to work with their strengths. This may involve some creative solutions, but better team dynamics will lead directly to better collaboration, and much better project outcomes.

  5. The Intersection of Change Management and Cybersecurity, out earlier this week was a reflection on how cybersecurity projects create unique change management challenges. Organisations that hold data need to understand the burden of responsibility to keep that data safe. Effective engagement and communication with customers and stakeholders about cyber safety throughout change is key.
