Saturday Catch-Up: Models and Frameworks

Updated: Apr 25

A central proficiency we need to navigate as Change Managers is the landscape of change management models and frameworks on offer. Change is essentially a business discipline, and is quite generalist in nature, while at the same time being very situation-specific. In a change management assignment the unique combination of variables you will face calls for a top tool kit. Versatile Change Managers who can draw on their skills to apply the right tools will be leading the way for their organisations and stepping through the challenges to find solutions. In today's Saturday catch-up we look back at some of the models and frameworks in our toolkit.

  1. Published on 27 March 2024, A Change Manager's audit against the McKinsey 7-S Framework looked at how relevant the McKinsey 7-S framework had been to delivery change management. It provides seven interrelated factors - all styled to start with the letter "S" as a mnemonic for ease of remembering: strategy, structure, systems, shared values, skills, style, and staff. It is said that by looking at these elements together, organisations gain a holistic view of their operations. We reviewed some practical change management experiences to understand whether this level of coordination increased the likelihood of change success.

  2. Happy Valentine's Day! On February 14, 2024 we felt the mystery of love alongside The mystery of Agile Change Management. Knowing that agile software development methods have now become a mainstream in managing projects and teams with a development-production cycle, we examined how change managers can support an agile environment.

  3. We recently commenced a deep-dive series into Kotter's 8-Step Process for Leading Change, in War Stories with Kotter, Part 1: Institute Change published 9 April 2024, we started by looking at sustainability in a high-level government project aimed at joining up executive communication about stakeholders; and how this government agency worked towards making change stick.

  4. Next was War Stories with Kotter, Part 2: Enlist a Volunteer Army on April 10 2024. The change agent network or change community will be familiar to many change managers. Depending on implementation, Kotter's volunteer army concept may not be exactly the same as a change agent network. Change Agent Networks can include formal roles that are embedded within the organisational structure; and the volunteer army may not - they might just be a group of committed individuals who participate from a sense of belief in the vision and purpose for the change.

  5. This was followed up by a more specific investigation into Building a Change Agent Network: A Strategic Approach on 11 April 2024. A concise guide on creating the kind of change agent network that can effectively drive organisational change.
