Go as far as you can see, and when you get there, you will see further.

A quaint village by a stream with mountains in the background

In a quaint village nestled between rolling hills and whispering streams, there lived a wise elder named Amara. Amara was known for her insightful guidance and the ability to navigate the complexities of change. One day, a young villager named Kavi approached her, seeking wisdom on how to manage the uncertainties of life.

Amara smiled knowingly and shared a tale. "Imagine, young one, that you stand at the edge of a dense forest. The path ahead is hidden, and the destination obscured by the thick foliage. Yet, I tell you this: go as far as you can see. Venture into the unknown with courage, for with each step, the landscape of your journey will unfold. As you traverse the winding trails, face the challenges, and embrace the changes, you will gain new perspectives and insights. It is in the journey itself that you find the strength to journey further. Remember, my dear, go as far as you can see, and when you get there, you will see further."

Kavi took Amara's words to heart, embarking on a journey of personal and professional growth. Through the twists and turns of life, Kavi faced unexpected challenges, adapted to change, and celebrated victories. With each experience, Kavi not only went as far as the eyes could perceive but found the vision to see beyond. The village soon witnessed a transformation, as Kavi's resilience and adaptability inspired others to embrace change with open hearts.

And so, the tale of Kavi and Amara became a timeless reminder in the village—a whisper of encouragement during moments of uncertainty. "Go as far as you can see, and when you get there, you will see further," echoed through the hills, a testament to the power of embracing change with courage and embracing the unknown with open arms.

The real story

If you spotted that this wonderful short tale was written by my AI friend, and the image also computer generated, well done! The real story is this.

In my first job as a Trainee Business Project Manager, my boss - Rob - had a sign on his wall. It was a very simple, printed sign in black ink on crumpled white A4. He had printed it with a light bulb icon for emphasis.

It read, "go as far as you can see, and when you get there, you will see further."

My boss never referred to it, and as far as I can remember we never discussed it. I've tried over the years to Google it and get an attribution; some engines say Zig Ziglar coined the phrase.

But no matter, the point is this. The phrase is evocative and instantly meaningful. It's encouraging and highlights the practicality of keeping going with our current plan until we have new information that gives new perspective. It is both inspiration to keep moving positively towards change, as much as it is inspiration to create succinct phrases with rhythm and power.

I love this phrase and as you can see, it has stuck with the young trainee for around 30 years serving as a touchstone throughout countless change projects. Thank you Zig, or whomever. And thank you, Rob Eldridge.
